What is Matter? The Universal Language of the Smart Home

For years, the Smart Home was less of a home and more of a collection of silos. You had your Works with Alexa bulbs, your HomeKit only sensors, and a drawer full of proprietary hubs.

Currently, those silos have finally crumbled. Thanks to matter  the open-source connectivity standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung, we have reached the era of True Interoperability. If a device has the Matter seal, it doesn't just work with your phone it works with everything.

What is Matter?

Matter is not a new wireless protocol like Wi-Fi or Zigbee. Instead, it is a common language that runs on top of the hardware you already have. It uses Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth tasks like video and Thread for low-power tasks like light switches and sensors.

The "Local-First" Revolution

The most important thing about Matter is that it is local-first. Unlike older smart devices that had to send a signal to a server in the cloud just to turn on a lamp, Matter commands happen inside your house.

Speed; Near-instant response times.
Privacy; Your data stays on your local network.
Reliability; Your smart home keeps working even if your internet goes down.

What’s New in Matter 1.4 and 1.5?

If you haven't checked in on Matter since its launch, you’ve missed a lot. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has been busy.

Matter 1.4: The Energy Expert
Released in late 2024 and fully adopted by 2026, version 1.4 focused on Energy Management.

Matter now supports smart integration for solar panels, home batteries, and heat pumps.

It’s now easier to share a single device like a smart lock across both the Apple Home and Google Home apps simultaneously without glitches.

Matter 1.5: The Eye of the Home
The big news for 2026 is Matter 1.5, which finally introduced support for Smart Cameras.

You can now view your doorbell camera on a Google Nest Hub, an Amazon Echo Show, or an Apple TV without needing three different skill setups.

Support for soil sensors and advanced air quality monitors was added, making it the go-to standard for smart gardens and green homes.

Why Matter Multi-Admin is a Game Changer

The Multi-Admin feature is the killer app of Matter. This year, households aren't forced to pick one ecosystem.

You might prefer using an iPhone to control the lights, while your partner prefers Android and Google Assistant, and the kids use an Amazon Echo in the playroom.

With Matter, the same smart bulb can be controlled by all three platforms at the exact same time. No more fighting over which ecosystem to buy into.

Matter vs. Thread: Understanding the Duo

People often confuse Matter and Thread. Think of it this way:
Matter is the language being spoken.
Thread or Wi-Fi is the wire or wireless signal the language travels over.

Currently, most Matter devices use Thread because it creates a mesh network. Every plugged-in Thread device like a smart plug acts as a signal booster, making your whole network stronger the more devices you add.

Tips

Buying a non-Matter smart home device is like buying a TV that doesn't have HDMI. It might work now, but you’re locking yourself into a closed system that will eventually feel outdated. Matter is the first standard that puts the consumer not the tech giants in control of the home.

Pros

  • Works across Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung.
  • Operates locally for speed and privacy.
  • Simplifies setup with a single standard.

Cons

  • Some older devices still require a Bridge to work with Matter.
  • Not every legacy feature like specific RGB light modes is supported yet.
