How to Set Up Simple Home Automation Routines for Better Mornings and Nights

Setting up your first automation is like teaching your house a new trick. You don't need to be a coder; you just need to decide how you want your day to feel.

Here is a simple guide to setting up the two "game-changer" routines.

 The "Sunshine" Wake-Up

To stop hating your alarm clock.
Open your app Hue, Govee, Alexa, or Google Home.

  • Look for Routines or Automations usually a clock or star icon.
  • Select Time of Day and set it for 20 minutes before you actually need to be out of bed.
  • Choose your bedroom lights.
  • Look for a setting called Fade In or Sunrise. Set the duration to 20 minutes.
  • Pick a Warm White or Soft Amber.
  • You’ll wake up to a room that’s already glowing, making it 10x easier to toss the covers off.

The "Wind-Down" Evening

To tell your brain it’s time to stop scrolling and start sleeping.

  • Call it Night Mode.
  • Select Sunset (the app uses your weather data to know exactly when this is) or a specific time like 9:00 PM.
  • Select the Action; Choose your living room and bedside lamps.

The Setting:

  • Brightness; Set to 20%.
  • Color; Deep Orange or Warm Candlelight.
  • Blue light keeps you awake; warm orange light helps your body produce melatonin.
  • Have the kitchen lights turn off completely at this time to discourage late-night snacking!

Keep it Subtle: Don't have lights flash or turn bright red unless it's for an emergency. You want the house to nudge you, not shout at you.

Run the routine once while you’re standing there to make sure the brightness is just right.

If you have a babysitter or guests, tell them! Nothing confuses a guest like the living room suddenly turning orange at 9:00 PM
